ALBUM REVIEW 3.0: "Harry Styles" by Harry Styles
I was never a fan of One Direction. But I have always been a fan of Harry Styles. I always knew he was going to go solo, but I kept it lowkey in order to avoid the wrath of the fandom.
I've also never been a fan of folk music, but suddenly Harry Styles comes out with a folk album and boiiiiiiiiiiiii I almost bought a banjo. You could argue it's alternative rock, but details, details.
First Impressions
The first song I heard on the album was Sign of the Times, as he released this song a few months earlier as a single. I immediately fell in love with the song, and thought it was the prettiest tune I'd heard in a while. Recently someone told me the lyrics are about Style's friend who committed suicide, which made me love the song even more. This song served as an amazing first impression of Style's talent as a solo artist, and made me superrrrr pumped for the album. Then the album came out. I listened to the whole thing. Only liked two songs from the album. The album is more folk than it is alternative rock, I can now say with confidence. And I think that's why I didn't loveeee every single song, like I was hoping to. Bummer. Regardless, I think the album is well crafted, and sets the bar high for his solo career.
Favorites
1. Woman - I have a habit of describing the emotions that I feel while listening to a song, instead of describing the actual song. So I'll do the same here! This song is one of those songs that you listen to while eating fries and milkshakes outside your neighborhood diner at 12 am. I've never actually experienced this situation, butttttttttt I've seen it on the show Riverdale so I've basically lived it. This song is so smooth and so groovyy. It's definitely a summertime song. A lets-throw-some-stuff-on-the-grill-and-talk-about-love-until-the-morning, type vibe.
2. Sweet Creature - This song on the other hand, is a whole other vibe. It's crazy how versatile Harry Styles is. It's like listening to several different artists in one. Anywhoo. Sweet creature is more dainty and gentle than the other songs on the album. It's truly beautiful, and was clearly created with loads of emotion and passion. The listener can feel it. He also displays a beautiful vocal range on this track, which is subtle and super pretty. This song is more lets-picnic-and-eat-cheese-and-grapes, and I like that kind of vibe too.
This is probably the most brief album review I've ever written! This could be either good or bad:
Good; the album is so beautifully simple, there's nothing for me to analyze or breakdown. It's perfectly minimalist.
Bad; the album wasn't my favorite, but the few songs that I did like, I absolutely loved. Therefore, I have only a few words to say about it.
Regardless, go listen to the album. Decide what you think! But please give it a listen, support ya boy Harry's solo career ya'll.
